Description
An England schools international, Sunderland born full back Dick Hughes spent 1919-20 on the books of his hometown club without making a first team appearance for The Wearsiders before moving to Second Division Bristol City in the summer of 1920, making his Football League debut against Coventry City in April 1921. In his twelve seasons at Ashton Gate they were relegated three times but twice bounced back to win the Third Division (South) Championship in 1923 and 1927, with Hughes featuring regularly in both campaigns. He made a total of 280 appearances for The Robins before joining Exeter City in the summer of 1932, making 28 appearances for The Grecians over the next two seasons before his retirement from playing in 1934.
