Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States born right back John “Jock” Gibson began his football career in Scottish junior football with Netherburn in 1918 and he played for Blantyre Celtic in 1919 before joining First Division club Sunderland in November 1920, for whom he made his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw at Everton the same month, his only appearance of the season. He made 4 further appearances for The Wearsiders in 1921-22, before joining Second Division club Hull City in May 1922.
At Anlaby Road he formed a formidable partnership with Matt Bell, enjoying seven seasons as a first team regular and missing only a single game for The Tigers in their 1927-28 campaign. He was then sold to First Division club Sheffield United for £5,000 in March 1929 after 218 appearances for Hull City, and he had four further years at Bramall Lane, making 77 appearances for The Blades, before joining Luton Town in the 1933 close season, However he only featured three times for The Hatters that autumn before retiring from the professional game in the summer of 1934, going on to play for Vauxhall Motors in Luton.
