Description

Birkenhead, Cheshire born outside left Ellis Rimmer started his football career with Parkside and Northern Nomads in 1922 and played for Whitchurch in 1923 before joining Tranmere Rovers. He played alongside a young Dixie Dean at Tranmere making his Football League debut at Doncaster Rovers in September 1924 and by 1928 had impressed the scouts enough, with 22 goals in 66 games, to attract a big money move to Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £3,000 in February 1928. He played for Wednesday for the next 11 seasons where he was part of the team that won back to back League Championships in 1928-29 and 1929-30, a season when he played in Wednesday’s team that lost in the FA Cup semi final to Huddersfield Town by 2 goals to 1.

He was first selected for England in April 1930 scoring twice in a 5-2 victory over Scotland at Wembley. He won 2 more caps the following month on England’s summer tour against Germany and Austria, and a final cap in November 1931 when he played in a 7-1 victory over Spain at Highbury.

He famously scored two late goals to win the 1935 FA Cup Final at Wembley against West Bromwich Albion. He played for Wednesday until 1938, in total scoring 140 goals in 420 games and was capped 4 times by England between April 1930 and December 1931, scoring twice on his debut in a 5-2 win over Scotland at Wembley. He scored eight FA Cup goals in total that season and achieved the rare feat of scoring in every round, only twelve players have managed this in the history of English football.

He also scored 18 league goals to give him a best ever season tally of 26 and finished as Wednesday’s top scorer. He continued to be a regular for Wednesday until March 1938 when Bill Fallon took his place on the left wing. In his 10-year career with Sheffield Wednesday, Rimmer played 420 games in all competitions, scoring 140 goals.

He finished his career with a brief spell at Ipswich Town making 4 appearances for them having joined them in the 1938 close season.
