Leicester born goalkeeper Arthur Howes played junior football for Leicester Waverley before joining Second Division hometown club Leicester Fosse at Blackpool in February 1897, making 12 first team appearances before joining Southern League Reading in the autumn of 1897. He returned to Leicester Fosse in 1898 making 4 further appearances during 1898-99, before joining Brighton United, soon to become Brighton & Hove Albion later in 1899. He then went north to the Scottish League and played for Dumbarton in 1900 and Dundee in 1901 before returning to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1902, staying two years before joining Queen’s Park Rangers in 1904, where he played for several more years before retirement.
