Bengeo, Hertford born right half Les Howe played for non league Enfield in 1928 before joining the Tottenham Hotspur’s nursery club Northfleet in 1929. Howe then signed as a professional for Second Division club Tottenham Hotspur in August 1930, and made his Football League debut at right half at Southampton on Boxing Day the same year. He scored 7 times in 18 appearances as Spurs were promoted as Second Division runners up in 1932-33 and had two seasons in the top flight before Spurs’ relegation in 1935.
He played in every outfield position for the White Hart Lane club which also included an appearance as an emergency goalkeeper in a match against Coventry City. A versatile player, he featured in 182 matches and scored 29 goals in all competitions for The Lilywhites until his career was effectively finished by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
Howe served his country in The RAF during the War. After the hostilities had ended Howe returned to Spurs in the capacity of managing the club’s A side before becoming the manager of Enfield Town in 1948, remaining their manager for a season.
