Description

Rochdale born winger Ron Hornby began playing junior football for Bagslate United Methodist Church in 1929 and Rochdale St Clement’s in 1930 before joining his hometown professional club as an amateur in February 1932, making his Football League debut the same month against Southport and playing twice for ‘Dale before leaving them. He spent some of 1933 at Oldham Athletic but didn’t make their first eleven and then moved to Stalybridge Celtic, from where he was signed by Second Division Burnley in May 1934.

He played both sides of the Second World War for Burnley although his post war involvement was limited to a single goal in 5 appearances, but over his 14 years with The Clarets he managed 20 goals in 137 appearances, all of which were in the Second Division (or the FA Cup) besides the final 4 matches in 1947-48 which came in the top flight after Burnley’s promotion the previous season.
