Little Birch, Hertfordshire born centre half Ernest Hiles began his football career with Hereford United from where he joined Fulham in 1934 making his Football League debut at Brentford that September, his only appearance of his debut season. He only made one further appearance the next season, in a 7-0 thrashing of Port Vale in April 1936, and featured in no matches at all in 1936-37.
Hiles came into the team on a regular basis in March 1938 and missed only 5 matches the following season, however his Football League career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 by when he had made 51 appearances for The Cottagers. He continued to represent Fulham in wartime league football and remained on their books until 1948 although he never played again for the first eleven after peacetime football had resumed in 1946.
