Trehafod, Rhondda Valley born full back Thomas Hicks began his football career with Pontypridd in 1923 and joined First Division Preston North End in 1924, making his Football League debut against Burnley that September, also playing a week later in a defeat at Leeds United in what proved to be a relegation season for Preston. These two appearances were followed by a further 8 outings over the next 2 seasons in the Second Division before Hicks joined Nottingham Forest in the 1927 close season. However his stay at The City Ground lasted only one season and saw him make 8 appearances, before he joined Northampton Town in 1929, where again he was a fringe player, and for whom he made a mere 5 appearances in 1929-30 before joining non league Chester in 1930.
