Buckley, Flintshire born right back Charlie Hayes began his football career with Buckley Town in 1920 and joined Tranmere Rovers ahead of their inaugural Football League season after they joined the Third Division (North) in 1921. Hayes made his Football League debut at Crewe Alexandra that September and played 19 matches in his debut campaign before losing his place in January 1923. He stayed a further two seasons on the fringes of the first team at Prenton Park but made only 7 further first team appearances before joining non league Mold Town in the summer of 1924.
