Maryhill, Glasgow born full back William Hay was an amateur footballer who began his football career with Maryhill before having spells with both Partick Thistle and Glasgow Rangers, for whom he made 6 Scottish League and Cup appearances between September 1889 and January 1893, also winning The Glasgow Cup with Rangers in a victory over Celtic the following month. In November 1894 he made a single appearance for Queen’s Park in a Scottish Cup defeat at Celtic.

He began playing with London Caledonians from 1891, and while in London he also played for Southern League clubs Millwall Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur, for whom he appeared 4 times in total between 1894 and 1897, one appearance of which came in an FA Cup tie in 1895-96. He returned to Rangers in 1896 and made one further League appearance for The Gers against Dundee in November that year.
