Description

Auchterhouse, Angus born right half George King began his senior football career with Football Alliance club Sunderland Albion in 1890, and joined First Division Burnley in the 1892 close season, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers that September. He scored twice in 35 appearances for The Clarets before joining Southern League Millwall Athletic in the summer of 1894.

At Millwall he was part of their teams that won The Southern League Championship back to back in 1894-95 and 1895-96, and although his exact playing record is unknown, he was clearly a considerable star of their line up.

During the First World War he enlisted as a Private with The Northumberland Fusiliers in their 20th Service Battalion (First Tyneside Scottish) in 1915, already aged 45, and went over the top on the first day of The Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916, being one of over 19,000 killed in action that day. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
