Description

Glasgow born outside left  Joshua “Jack” Harris, often also known as Joe, played for junior clubs Vale of Clyde in 1908 and Glasgow Ashfield in 1909 but started his professional career in England at Second Division Burnley, for whom he made his Football League debut at Fulham in October 1910. After 62 games and 5 goals for The Clarets he joined Bristol City in the close season of 1912 playing for them either side of the First World War during which he played a good deal of Army representative football and he also played in Scottish League football, twice for Partick Thistle in the 1915-16 season and eight times for Clydebank in the 1918-19 season, as a wartime guest. However he was suspended for twelve months and Bristol City were fined £50 after he was paid while being on amateur forms.

He played in Bristol City’s 2-1 FA Cup semi final defeat to Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge in March 1920. When Bristol City were relegated from the Second Division in 1922, Harris was awarded a £600 benefit by Bristol City before he left for Leeds United in July 1922 after 28 goals in 218 games for The Robins. He missed only one  match as Leeds United won the Second Division Championship in 1923-24 and was an ever present in his first season in the First Division, however he lost his place at the start of the 1925-26 season and joined Fulham in October 1925 having scored 16 goals in 134 games for Leeds. He then played two seasons at Craven Cottage scoring twice in 47 appearances before retirement in 1927. Harris later managed French team RC Lens between 1934 and 1935.

His younger brother was Neil Harris who played for Newcastle United and Scotland, and his nephew John Harris played for Chelsea for many years after the Second World War and later managed Sheffield United.
