Description

Left half Frank Handley began his football career with Hanley Town, from where he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. Unable to get into the first team at Wolves, he had his first spell in Southern League football with Bristol Rovers. After a spell back in the Cheshire area where he played for Crewe Alexandra, Handley returned to the Southern League joining Swindon Town in the summer of 1911.

It was at Swindon that his career matured, and he played in the FA Charity Shield match early in his time there as Swindon were beaten 8-4 by Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in September 1911. He was also part of their team later the same season that reached the FA Cup semi final, where they were narrowly beaten in a replay by eventual winners Barnsley at Meadow Lane, Nottingham.

In the final four seasons at The County Ground prior to the First World War Handley scored 3 times in 133 appearances for The Robins and was part of their team that won the Southern League Championship in 1913-14, before the First World War effectively ended his career.
