Wortley, near Barnsley, Yorkshire born right half Fretwell Hall began his football career with South Shields of the North-Eastern League in early 1913. His brother Ellis was already on their books, and another brother, Ben, was to join later. He remained with the club until February 1915, when he signed for Midland League club Goole Town. Hall served in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps during the First World War.

Afterwards, a trial with Derby County, though promising, came to nothing, and he spent the 1919-20 season with Norwich City, for whom he made 30 Southern League appearances.

He signed for Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of their debut season in the Football League as founder members of the newly formed Third Division. His Football League debut came in their inaugural match, a 2-0 defeat away to Southend United on 28th August 1920. Competition was fierce for the right half position, and Hall made only 11 more first-team appearances in that season.

He moved on to Halifax Town, and again played in his new club’s first Football League match in the new Northern Section of the Third Division, Halifax lost 2-0 at home to Darlington on 27th August 1921. He scored twice in 57 appearances in a two-season stay at The Shay, playing alongside his brother Ellis in 1922-23. He then returned to the Southern League for two seasons, firstly with Torquay United joining them in the summer of 1923 and then with Peterborough & Fletton United who he joined in 1924, his last senior club.

His older brother Harry Hall also played for Hull City and Huddersfield Town, as well as for Rotherham Town and Grimsby Town. Two further older brothers played League football: Ben Hall played for Grimsby Town, Derby County and Leicester Fosse as well as South Shields, and was later the manager of Bristol Rovers in the early 1920’s; Ellis Hall played with Fretwell at South Shields and Halifax Town, also playing for Hull City, Stoke, Huddersfield Town, Hamilton Academical and Millwall. Another brother played Midland League (semi-professional) football.
