Description

Ecclesfield, Sheffield born centre half Ellis Hall made his Football League debut for Hull City as a 16 year old at Blackpool in March 1906 in their inaugural League season, playing 8 times for The Tigers that season and the following season before joining Southern League Millwall Athletic in 1907. A spell in non league with Hastings followed before he joined recently bankrupted Stoke City in 1909, they had resigned from The Football League and were playing in the Birmingham & District League.

Hall joined Huddersfield Town in the 1910 close season making 24 appearances in their inaugural Football League season and spent two seasons (2 goals in 40 matches) at Leeds Road, before joining South Shields in 1912. Once the First World War had finished he joined Scottish League Hamilton Academical in 1919, staying three years before a return to Football League action with Halifax Town in June 1922. He scored 3 times in 129 appearances at The Shay, leaving in 1925 to join Rochdale, where he failed to make the first eleven, before moving to non league Consett in 1926 ahead of his eventual retirement.

His older brother Harry Hall also played for Hull City and Huddersfield Town with Ellis, as well as for Rotherham Town and Grimsby Town. Two further brothers played League football: Ben Hall played for Grimsby Town, Derby County and Leicester Fosse as well as South Shields, and was later the manager of Bristol Rovers in the early 1920’s; Fretwell Hall played with Ellis at South Shields and Halifax Town, also playing for Norwich City, Brighton, Torquay United and Peterborough. Another brother played Midland League (semi-professional) football.
