Coylton, Ayrshire born wing half George Getgood began his football career with Ayr Seaside and joined his local Scottish League club Ayr United in 1912, playing two seasons for The Honest Men before moving to Southern League club Reading in July 1914, guesting for Ayr United during the First World War between serving in the Army. He returned to Reading on resumption of peacetime football and played in their final Southern League season in 1919-20 and their inaugural Football League match at Newport County in August 1920. Described by Holley & Chalk as “an accomplished and versatile player, whose best position was at centre-half”, he had a reputation as a strong tackler, scoring once in 39 matches during their first League campaign.
In August 1921 Birmingham signed him to strengthen their newly promoted squad but he only played 10 First Division matches when in March 1922 Southampton players Fred Foxall and Joe Barratt were exchanged for Getgood and his Birmingham colleague Jack Elkes, with Getgood playing 11 times as Southampton won the 1922 Third Division (South) Championship. In February 1923, after a single goal in a further 23 matches for The Saints, he was involved in another exchange transfer, moving to Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers for Wolves player Bill McCall, but he couldn’t help prevent Wolves’ relegation.
He scored once in 40 appearances the following season as Wolves were immediately promoted as Third Division (North) Champions but played only twice more the next season before he joined non league Kidderminster Harriers in early 1925 after scoring once in 59 appearances for Wolves, but he returned to Football League action in the autumn of 1926 playing 5 matches for Aberdare Athletic. He then played for Birmingham & District League club Shrewsbury Town later in 1926 before returning to Scotland to play with East of Scotland League club Gala Fairydean in 1927 and later the same year for Second Division sides Bo’Ness and Bathgate, before once again returning to non league football in the Midlands with Nuneaton Town 1929, finishing his career joining (bus company works team) Midland Red Sports in 1930 before his eventual retirement.
