Denny, Stirlingshire born centre half Sandy Gillespie signed for Alloa Athletic in 1910 from his local club Denny Athletic, joining Cowdenbeath in 1912. After six years with Cowdenbeath he joined Ayr United in 1918, moving to Wales with Ton Pentre in 1921. A year later he moved to Football League club Aberdare Athletic making his Football League debut against Exeter City in August 1922, playing a single season at Aberdare, making 36 appearances for the club, before re-joining Ton Pentre in the summer of 1923. However he soon returned to Ayr United before joining non league Ashton National in 1924.
