Description

King’s Heath, Birmingham born right half Edward Gardner began his football career with BSA Sports in local football, from where he signed for Second Division club Birmingham in 1908, making his Football League debut against Chesterfield Town in April 1909. From that September he established himself in the first eleven and was ever present from his getting into the team through to the end of the season, making a career best 35 appearances for The Blues.

He was then a regular for the next three seasons, scoring twice in 24 appearances as Birmingham narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight in 1912-13, finishing third in the Second Division, but he lost his place in the side in February 1913, and didn’t return to the first eleven for over a year, thereafter becoming a fringe player until peacetime football was suspended due to the onset of the First World War in the 1915 close season. After the War he returned to St Andrews, appearing once more for the first team in a goalless draw at Huddersfield Town in October 1919, before joining non league King’s Heath later that year after 4 goals in 120 appearances for Birmingham, playing there until his eventual retirement.
