After 4 goals in 33 appearances during 1901-02 he was signed by Newcastle United in September 1902, but his opportunities at St James’ Park were limited to 3 goals in 10 appearances and he left in May 1903 to join Bolton Wanderers, where he scored once in 8 appearances only before leaving to join Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion a year later. He had only one season with Brighton before joining Queen’s Park Rangers in 1905, where he played two seasons before joining Carlisle United in 1907. A return to Scotland with Johnstone in 1908 lasted only a season before he returned to Carlisle in 1909, where he finished his playing career.
