Bulwell born full back Ernie Gadsden was playing in local Nottingham football before joining Norwich City in 1920, making his debut in their inaugural Football League match in August 1920 at Plymouth Argyle. He played 19 times for Norwich that first season but returned north to join County Durham non league side Shildon Athletic the following summer. In 1922 he moved to Portsmouth, however he failed to make a single appearance for Pompey’s first eleven, and joined Second Division Blackpool in 1923. At Bloomfield Road he did get limited opportunities, playing 7 matches over the 1923-24 and 1924-25 seasons. He then joined Halifax Town in the summer of 1925 and made 85 appearances for The Shaymen over the next 3 seasons in Division 3 (North).
