Ballochmyle, nearAuchinleck, Ayrshire born centre half Jimmy Frew began his football career with Lugar Boswell during the First World War and played for Lanemark in 1919 and Nithsdale Wanderers in 1920, from where he was signed by Scottish League club Kilmarnock the same year, subsequently being loaned back to Nithsdale Wanderers. He made his Scottish League debut for Killie at Hamilton Academical in February 1921, his only first team appearance of his debut season, and scored once in 19 appearances before being signed by First Division Chelsea in the summer of 1922.

He made his Football League debut against Everton in February 1923 and held his place until the end of the season, but only played 8 matches the next season as Chelsea were relegated. In the Second Division he remained on the fringes at Stamford Bridge for three further seasons, and by the time he joined Third Division (South) club Southend United in the 1927 close season he had made 43 appearances for The Pensioners.

At The Kursaal he enjoyed two seasons of regular football, making 59 appearances for The Shrimpers, and he then joined Carlisle United, where he scored twice in 27 appearances during 1929-30, his last known club before either a return to Scotland or retirement.

NB the photograph shows Chelsea goalkeeper Colin Hampton dealing with a West Ham United cross during (probably) their 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in October 1923. Frew is the onlooking defender to the right of the photograph behind Chelsea captain Jack Harrow.
