Cardross, Argyll born inside forward Billy Fleming played for Darlington in 1892 from where he joined First Division Sheffield United in July 1893, making his Football League debut at Everton that September and scoring 7 goals in 22 appearances for The Blades during the season. He returned to Scotland to play for Abercorn the following close season, but returned to the Football League with Bury in the summer of 1895, for whom he only appeared twice in the early months of 1896, scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. He then joined Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in the 1896 close season where he scored once in 2 League appearances for Spurs during 1896-97.
