Description

Nottingham born centre half Arthur Finney played junior football with Goldthorpe United in 1920, joining Wath Athletic in 1921. From there he joined Second Division Bury in May 1923, making his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in April 1924 in a match during their run in to promotion. He was mainly a fringe player throughout his seven seasons at Gigg Lane, with the exception of 1928-29 when he played 35 matches during their relegation season. However back in the Second Division he only made 2 more appearances of his total of 76 for The Shakers, scoring once in a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in January 1925, before he was allowed to join Oldham Athletic in November 1929.

At Oldham he was similarly a fringe player and had to wait until January 1931 for his first team debut, playing twice immediately after the New Year, but the next season he made 28 appearances for The Latics. However after his last appearance in May 1932 he didn’t get any further opportunities and joined non league Hereford United in 1933. He finished his career by returning to Goldthorpe United in 1934.

In the photograph Finney is on the far right with Bury team mates Jack Ball (centre) and Cecil Notton.
