Scotswood-on-Tyne born goalkeeper John Elliott was playing for junior North East club Scotswood when signed by First Division Preston North End in February 1921, making his debut at Sunderland that April, and playing 4 games, being the 4th goalkeeper Preston used that season. Remarkably he was one of 5 goalkeepers used the following season, eventually James Mitchell played in the 1922 FA Cup Final, Elliott having played in the first 7 matches of the campaign and a further game, to be his last for North End, against West Brom in February. He signed for Watford in July 1923 but didn’t play for them and returned to North East non league football, before joining Washington in June 1925. He was ever present in the 1925-26 season, however he lost his place in November 1926 and after 57 appearances returned to local non league football, representing several clubs including Scotswood and Jarrow.
