Inkerman, near Paisley, Renfrewshire born left half Joe Elliott played for Haywood Wanderers in 1897 and played for Scotland in a  Junior international in 1898 before joining First Division club Preston North End, for whom he made his Football League debut at Burnley in September 1898. While that proved his only appearance of the 1898-99 season, he was a first team regular for the next three seasons thereafter, which saw Preston relegated in 1901, and by the time he joined semi-professional Plymouth Argyle in 1902, he had scored 4 goals in 88 appearances for North End. After a year in Devon he moved to Kent to join Southern League club New Brompton (now Gillingham), where he played for several seasons and this is his last known club before he finished his career.
