Description

Brechin, Angus born right back Robert “Bert” Eggo began his football career with junior club Brechin North End and joined First Division club Heart of Midlothian from there in 1918, making his Scottish League debut in a defeat to Celtic in April 1919 playing 3 matches for The Jambos through to October before briefly joining Dunfermline, from where First  Division club Sheffield Wednesday signed him early in 1920.

He made his Football League debut at Burnley in February 1920 and played only 4 games that season, which saw Sheffield Wednesday relegated. The following season he played 19 times as Wednesday finished mid table in the Second Division, whereupon he joined Reading in May 1921, and he was an ever present in his debut season playing at right half, scoring his first of only two career goals his fourth match in a 5-0 win over Merthyr Town. After a long spell at centre half in 1922-23 when he scored his other goal in a win over Luton Town in February 1923, he made the right back berth his own from October that year.

He was more or less ever present for over seven seasons for The Royals, and during that time he missed one game as they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1925-26, and the following season played 10 FA Cup ties as Reading went all the way to the FA Cup semi final (for the first time in Reading’s history), where they were beaten 3-0 at Molineux by eventual winners Cardiff City.

He became Reading’s club captain, however Reading endured a dreadful start to the 1928-29 season losing 7 of the first 8 games, although they eventually finished 15th. Eggo lost his place (possibly through injury) in September 1928 and after 2 goals in 322 appearances for The Biscuitmen, he never played again.
