Description

Willington, County Durham born right half Jack Dowsey began his football career with Hunswick Villa, signing for Newcastle United for £10 in June 1924 and making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in November 1925. Initially an inside right, he featured regularly for the reserve team, scoring 54 goals in the North Eastern League during his two seasons at the club, but made only 3 first team appearances before joining West Ham United for £250 in May 1926. His only First Division appearance for the club came on 6th September 1926, where he played at inside right in 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Dowsey joined North Eastern League club Carlisle United in August 1927, but soon returned to Football League action joining Sunderland in February 1928, scoring his only goal in the top flight in his second match in a win at Portsmouth the same month. He made 11 appearances for The Wearsiders during his year at Roker Park before signing for Second Division club Notts County in February 1929. It was at Meadow Lane that he converted to right half in September 1929, and he missed only one match for The Magpies in 1929-30 when County suffered relegation. He then missed only three matches in 1930-31 as Notts County won the Third Division (South) Championship to regain their Second Division status at the first attempt.

But he lost his place in September 1931 and was transferred to Third Division (South) club Northampton Town the same November after 4 goals in 103 appearances for Notts County. He was a regular for The Cobblers, missing only one match in 1932-33, until he lost his place after Christmas 1933, and played only twice more for them before the season end, joining non league Nuneaton Town in the summer of 1934 after 7 goals in 95 appearances for Northampton Town. Dowsey played regularly for Nuneaton in the Birmingham & District League as a centre half before his eventual retirement.
