Oxford born left winger Arthur Winterhalder represented West Ham Schools in 1899 before joining Southern League West Ham United in 1905, making his debut at Luton Town in January 1906. He scored a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur in a 4-2 home win on 29th December 1906. Two weeks later he scored again against Blackpool in the FA Cup as West Ham beat the Leaguers 2-1. He also scored goals in his final two League games of the season against Crystal Palace and Fulham.

After 7 goals in 20 appearances for The Irons, he joined Everton in the 1907 close season making his Football League debut at Preston North End that September, however he managed only 4 first team appearances for The Toffees in his single season at Goodison Park before joining Preston North End in 1908. After struggling for opportunities in his first two seasons at Deepdale he became a regular in 1910-11, making 32 appearances during the campaign, but joined Accrington Stanley in 1911 after 6 goals in 57 appearances for North End. His stay at Accrington was brief and he returned to Preston playing two further first team games for the club in January 1912.

Note, despite playing with Herbert Winterhalder at West Ham, despite the unusual surname the pair are not believed to have been related.
