Description

Holytown, Lanarkshire born left back Willie Dornan began his football career with Pumpherston Rangers from where he made his first foray into senior football with Leith Athletic in 1913, making 10 appearances during the 1913-14 season. He was signed by near neighbours Hibernian and made his debut against Dumbarton in April 1914 but was soon loaned back to Leith Athletic, where he made a further 25 appearances before returning to Hibernian. Although he only made 5 more appearances having returned to Hibs towards the end of the 1914-15 season, he established himself in the first team from November 1915.

He played 357 times in the Scottish League, as well as 32 Scottish Cup ties for Hibernian over fifteen seasons between April 1914 and October 1927, and he ranks 6th on the list of all time appearance makers. Only a handful players, including Pat Stanton and Arthur Duncan, have exceeded that number of games. He featured in two Scottish Cup Finals, which Hibs lost to Celtic in 1923, and the following year when they were defeated by Airdrieonians. He later played for Queen of the South from 1928 to 1931, scoring his only career goal for Queens’ in 107 appearances before his eventual retirement.
