Hadley, Shropshire born winger J0hn “Jerry” Dean started his football career with Trench Villa in 1900 and joined First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1901, making his Football League debut against Bury that December, and playing 3 times through to Christmas. However he was restricted to a single appearance in 1902-03 and left Wolves to join non league Ironbridge later in 1902, before joining Wellington Town in 1903. He returned to Football League action with Notts County in the summer of 1904, and played eight seasons for them, all in the First Division, scoring 52 goals (of which 17 were penalties as he was the regular penalty taker throughout his time at Meadow Lane) in 268 appearances before retiring at the end of the 1911-12 season (possibly due to injury).
