Penarth, Glamorgan born inside lrft Robert “Roy” McDonald began his football career with Lovell’s Athletic and played for Barry Town before joining Newport County in 1922. He didn’t appear in League or Cup football for Newport, although he scored once in 8 other matches (in the Welsh Cup) for Newport, and was a regular goalscorer for County’s reserves in 1922-23, winning a Wales Amateur international cap in 1923. He returned to Lovell’s Athletic in the 1923 close season, where he subsequently became the manager from 1939 until the mid 1950’s.
