Description

Birmingham born inside right Arthur Davis started in junior football with Birmingham St George’s in 1913 and Evesham Town in 1914, and after the First World War he joined First Division Aston Villa. He made his Football League debut at Liverpool in September 1919 and scored his only Villa goal at Notts County the following April, but found opportunities at Villa Park very limited. He joined Queen’s Park Rangers in the summer of 1922 after only 5 first team outings, doing so well at Rangers that by February 1924 First Division Notts County signed him after 22 goals in 67 appearances for QPR.

He was a consistent scorer at Notts County and top scored in 1924-25, when he missed only one match, 1925-26 and 1926-27, being described as “A good turn of speed, shoots well on the run and a crafty swerving forward whom backs have reason to respect”. He scored hat-tricks against Tottenham Hotspur in November 1925 and Huddersfield Town in May 1926, and after their relegation that summer all four goals in a 4-4 draw at Barnsley in October 1926, but after losing his place in December 1927 he only played once more for The Magpies and after 54 goals in 146 games he joined Crystal Palace in the 1928 close season. However he only played 5 times that autumn scoring once before joining non league Kidderminster Harriers in 1929 before retirement.
