South Bank, Middlesbrough born winger Jimmy Donnelly began his football career with South Bank in 1900 and joined Darlington St Augustine’s in 1901. He joined First Division Sheffield United in 1902 and made his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 1903. Initially a fringe player he broke into the team on a regular basis in March 1904, But he lost his place in January 1907 and transferred to Leicester Fosse that summer after 26 goals in 93 appearances for The Blades.
He played 3 seasons at Leicester, scoring 12 goals to help them to promotion as Second Division runners up in 1907-08, but they were relegated the following season. When he joined North Eastern League Darlington in 1910, he had scored 26 goals in 76 appearances for The Foxes.
