Lancaster born winger Joe Daly started his professional career in Ireland with Cliftonville in 1919, before moving back to England with Second Division Notts County for whom he made his debut at Hull City in March 1921. He played 29 games as The Magpies won the Second Division Championship in 1923 and continued as a regular in their subsequent First Division campaigns, and although he lost his automatic place in 1925-26, by the time he joined Northampton Town in the summer of 1927 he had scored 12 goals in 154 appearances in the black & white stripes. A single season at The County Ground saw him score 7 times in 37 matches, whereafter he moved to Luton town a year later and enjoyed 2 full seasons for The Hatters, scoring 4 goals in 76 appearances. He joined Gillingham in 1930 without playing for their first team before returning to non league football.
