Forward James Cunningham began his football career with Cambuslang Hibernian and signed for Scottish League club St Mirren during the 1904-05 season. He enjoyed several fine seasons for The Buddies, and played as St Mirren reached their first Scottish Cup Final in 1908. scoring The Buddies’ goal in the 53rd minute as they lost 5-1 to Celtic at Hampden Park. In all he scored 59 goals in 185 appearances before joining Kilmarnock in May 1911. At Kilmarnock he played in the front line with namesake and future Scotland international and Rangers stalwart Andy Cunningham, scoring 6 goals in 27 appearances during 1911-12, but his career after leaving Rugby Park is uncertain.
