Description

Thornbridge, near Falkirk, Stirlingshire born left back George Cummings started his career with Thornbridge Waverley in 1928 and Thornbridge Welfare in 1930, and played for Grange Rovers in 1931, joining Partick Thistle in 1932, having won junior international honours for Scotland aged 18. He represented The Scottish League in October 1934 and 1935, both times playing against The Irish League, and won the first three of 9 Scotland caps in 1935 while still a Partick Thistle player, making his Scotland debut against England in April 1935 and playing for Scotland until April 1938. He also represented the Scottish Football Association on their tour of the US and Canada while still a Thistle player.

Cummings signed for First Division Aston Villa from Partick Thistle for £9,350 in November 1935 and made his Football League debut for Villa against Chelsea shortly thereafter, although they were relegated at the end of the season. He played 237 times for Villa between November 1935 and his retirement in 1949, his only goal coming against Everton in August 1939. He gained a Second Division Championship medal in 1938 and a League War Cup tankard in 1944. He was popular with supporters due to his never-say-die spirit and no-nonsense defending and was the captain of Aston Villa’s great post war defence from 1945 to 1949.

After his playing retirement, he became a coach at Villa Park and managed several non league clubs before becoming a scout for Wolves.
