Kettering born wing half Frank ‘Danky’ Smith joined hometown club Kettering Town in 1919 before signing for Watford in March 1921 for £125, making his Football League debut at Gillingham the same month. Conscientious, consistent, and popular with both colleagues and spectators, he joined the club as an inside‐forward and later in his long Watford career settled at right‐half. Bert Bellamy followed him down from Kettering Town a couple of months after he signed.
In March 1925 Smith played in a representative match at Highbury in which experiments were made regarding the offside law, soon to be changed with dramatic effect. On finishing his professional football career in 1932 he had scored 31 goals in 341 appearances for The Hornets and he subsequently played amateur football for London General Country Services from September 1932.
