Description

Sanquhar, Dumfrieshire born right back Tom Crichton began his football career with Nithsdale Wanderers and played Army football during the First World War before joining Scottish League club Partick Thistle in January 1919 shortly after the conflict was over, initially playing centre half before moving position to right back, making his Scottish League debut in a 2-1 defeat at Celtic the following month.

Described as “a manager’s dream” and “a model of consistency”, he was part of Partick Thistle’s 1921 Scottish Cup winning team that beat Rangers 1-0 at Ccltic Park. This remains the only time in the club’s history that Partick have won the Scottish Cup, and Crichton, along with the other members of the team, were inducted into The Jags’ Hall of Fame in May 2009.

He received a benefit match in April 1924 for his service to the club, which totaled 236 appearances for The Jags, when Liverpool visited Firhill and were beaten 4-1 in front of 4,000 spectators, and a second benefit match two years later when a combined Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park XI played a Glasgow Select XI in front of a crowd of 10,000, awarded after Crichton had badly broken his leg in a match at Queen’s Park in October 1925, which ended his playing career.
