Dundee born goalkeeper Sidney Crawford (who went by his middle name, but is sometimes known as Harold) had been on the books at Newcastle United in 1907-08 before Arsenal signed him from Hebburn Argyle in June 1911, replacing Leigh Roose to make his Football League debut at Tottenham Hotspur on Christmas Day 1911, not a happy one as they lost 5-0. He was released in the summer of 1913 after 27 appearances for The Gunners and joined Reading, for whom he played both sides of the First World War, during which he served in the Armed Forces.
Initially playing for Reading in the Southern League, Crawford spent his last two seasons at Elm Park in The Football League, playing in Reading’s inaugural League match at Newport County in August 1920 and making 43 appearances during the campaign that first League season, followed by a further 33 appearances in 1921-22. In the summer of 1922 he moved to Millwall where during three seasons he played 79 times for The Lions, including 34 appearances as they finished third in the Third Division (South) table in 1923-24, before a move to North Eastern League club Workington in 1925, where he finished his career.
