Description

Mount Pleasant, Liverpool, born wing half Arthur Woodland started playing junior football in 1908 with St Polycarp’s, joining Kirkdale in 1909 and Zingari in 1910. In 1911 he joined St Helen’s Town from where he signed for Southern League Norwich City in 1912 and he played for The Canaries until the outbreak of the First World War. Once peacetime football resumed in 1919 he joined First Division Notts County, making his Football League debut against Bradford Park Avenue in February 1920, but during his 3 seasons at Meadow Lane he was never a confirmed regular in the starting line up, scoring once in 49 appearances before moving to Southend United in the summer of 1922. He played a single season at The Kursaal, scoring once in 32 appearances, before joining Southern League Pontypridd in 1923. He subsequently joined Leamington Town in 1924.

NB This photograph was taken on 7th February 1920 v Bradford Park Avenue at Meadow Lane, Notts lost the match 2-0. Jack Foster joined Luton Town at the end of the 1919-20 season, which confirms that the 1920-21 label at the bottom of the image is incorrect. The three players standing “behind” were not part of the line up and have been “doctored” into the image.
