Watford, Hertfordshire born centre forward or left winger Billy Cox began his football career at Leavesden Mental Hospital in 1918 before joining Southern League Watford in 1919, for whom he only appeared for their reserves. He joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Charlton Athletic in 1921, making his Football League debut at centre forward against Bristol Rovers that September, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory. Initially playing centre forward and then increasingly appearing at inside and outside left, he featured in every forward position for The Addicks, spending five seasons at The Valley, scoring 19 goals in 102 appearances for Charlton before joining Kent League club Sittingbourne in 1926.
