Description
Govan, Glasgow born centre forward Billy Cox began his football career with Govan YMCA in 1913 and played for Renfrew Juniors in 1914 and Whiteinch Glenbuck in 1915 before joining Scottish League club Clydebank in 1916. After the end of the First World War he joined Southern League club Cardiff City in 1919, and played 20 Southern League matches for The Bluebirds as well as winning the 1920 Welsh Cup with them, but he didn’t get a look in after Cardiff joined the Football League before transferring Third Division (South) club Newport County in December 1920.
Cox made his Football League debut the same month against Southend United and scored twice in 6 appearances for The Ironsides before a move to North Eastern League club Workington in 1922. He clearly caught the eye in Cumbria and was signed by First Division club Nottingham Forest in February 1923, playing his only match in a home defeat to West Bromwich Albion the following month before returning to Workington later in 1923, where he played out his career.
