Evenwood, County Durham born inside left George “Billy” Cook had a glittering football career. He had played for Evenwood Juniors and Trindle Juniors before he signed for Bishop Auckland in 1914 as a 19 year old and moved to Rotherham County in 1922 having won the FA Amateur Cup in each of his final two years with Bishop Auckland. He made his Football League debut against Sheffield Wednesday that August and was ever present that season for Rotherham, playing 43 matches and scoring 8 goals, before joining Herbert Chapman’s Huddersfield Town the following summer where he won a treble of League Championships in 1924, 1925 and 1926, with a 14 goal contribution during the hat-trick season. He played at least 25 League games per season in each campaign.
After 35 goals in 91 games for The Terriers, he signed for Aston Villa in February 1927, and 1927-28 bought the most prolific season of his career as he netted 27 times, including hat-tricks against Middlesbrough in the League and Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup tie. After 40 goals in 61 games he joined Second Division Tottenham Hotspur aged 34 in the summer of 1929, they narrowly missed out on promotion in his second season at White Hart Lane. Cook scored a hat-trick in an 8-1 demolition of Burnley in September 1930, and during his two seasons with Spurs he scored 24 goals in 67 appearances.
He then joined Brentford in the 1931 close season and began his time at Griffin Park well, scoring on his second appearance in a 1-1 draw with Thames. In a mediocre season for the club, he failed to find the net again until 30th April 1932, when he bagged two goals in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. With the arrival of forwards Jack Holliday and Billy Scott, Cook departed Brentford in the summer of 1932 after 15 games before joining Birmingham & District League Colwyn Bay United.
