Description
Nantwich, Cheshire born wing half George Clarke began his football career with home town club, Nantwich Town and from there joined Second Division Stoke City in the summer of 1914, but he had yet to make the first team when the onset of First World War caused the suspension of peacetime football. Resuming with Stoke in the summer of 1919, he made his Football League debut at Barnsley in September 1919, and over the next five seasons he scored 4 goals in 165 games, being ever present in 1921-22 as they were promoted on finishing runners up in the Second Division, before dropping out of the Stoke team early in 1924 when he broke his leg against Leeds United in the FA Cup, never to play for them again. He did however briefly re-surface three years later at near neighbours Crewe Alexandra, for whom he made 2 appearances in January 1927 before his retirement.
