Description

Oldmachar, Aberdeen born left half Harry Low had joined Orion FC in August 1901 from where he signed for Aberdeen in July 1903, making his Scottish League debut against Stenhousemuir that September. He scored 22 goals in 103 appearances for Aberdeen before being signed by First Division Sunderland in May 1907 for £400.

He made his Football League debut against Manchester City in September 1907 in a 5-2 defeat at Roker Park, immediately establishing himself as a regular in Sunderland’s first eleven. He helped Sunderland finish third in the League Championship in 1908-09 and again in 1910-11.

He was then part of their 1912-13 League Championship winning side and 1913 FA Cup Final team which lost against Aston Villa, after pulling out of the Scotland squad to be part of the FA Cup semi final against Newcastle United. He never made an international appearance for Scotland.

He scored 39 goals in 228 appearances for The Wearsiders before his career was cut short by the suspension of peacetime football due to the advent of the First World War in 1915. In February 1917, two and a half years since the outbreak of the War, Low enlisted in the Royal Navy as an able seaman. He served on HMS Dido and was honourably discharged after being wounded. He retired from football in May 1919, but died only just over a year later from pneumonia in September 1920 aged only 38.

He was the older brother of Newcastle United stalwart and Scottish international Wilf Low, who played with him for Aberdeen, and the uncle of Norman Low, who played for Liverpool, Newport County and Norwich City and managed Norwich, Workington and Port Vale.
