South Bank, Middlesbrough born centre half Willie Carr began his football career with South Bank in 1909 before joining hometown First Division club Middlesbrough in 1910, making his Football League debut at Bradford City in April 1911. He remained a fringe player at Ayresome Park before the First World War, making 7 appearances during their 1913-14 campaign that saw them finish third in the League Championship.

On the resumption of peacetime football after the War he returned to ‘Boro, and established himself as a first team regular from January 1920 before losing his place by the beginning of the 1921-22 campaign. He returned to the first team in December 1921 making 19 appearances before the season end, however he didn’t return to the first team until October 1923, making his final 6 appearances for ‘Boro over the next month, scoring 4 goals in 118 appearances over a dozen years of playing for the club.

He had four brothers, all of whom played for Middlesbrough: Walter and Henry, who signed as amateurs, and George and Jackie, who both signed professional contracts for the club with Jackie playing for England, George also playing for Leicester City and Stockport County.
