South Bank, Middlesbrough born centre half Jackie Carr joined his local side, South Bank East End as an inside right in 1908, playing for South Bank in 1909 from where he joined First Division Middlesbrough on amateur forms on 23rd December 1910, signing a professional contract with his hometown club on 25th January 1911. He made his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest on 2nd January 1911. Carr scored both goals in front of a crowd of 15,000. That was the only appearance he made that season, his next game not coming until 27th January 1912. He made only three further appearances that season, scoring once.

Carr made his mark in the 1912-13 campaign with 19 goals in 34 appearances, scoring a hat-trick in an FA Cup replay victory over Millwall Athletic in January 1913, being a regular for Middlesbrough until football was suspended due to the onset of the First World War. He scored 11 times as ‘Boro finished third in the League in 1913-14. Carr played for Middlesbrough both sides of the War, during which he served in the Armed Forces, and for eleven seasons thereafter, winning the Second Division Championship in both 1927 and 1929.

Carr was capped twice for England. His debut, against Ireland in Belfast on 25th October 1919, ended in a 1-1 draw, and his second and final cap came four years later against Wales at Cardiff on 5th March 1923. The game finished 2-2. He also played 3 times for The Football League.

After 20 years of service to Middlesbrough which produced 81 goals in 449 appearances, Carr was transferred to Blackpool in May 1930 for the sum of £500. He spent a season at Blackpool scoring twice in 14 games before moving on to Hartlepools United in 1931, firstly as player-coach and he retired as a player in the summer of 1932 after a goal in 10 games. He took over as manager in April 1932 holding the post for three years. Carr was subsequently made manager at Tranmere Rovers, managing them from May 1935 until November 1936 and subsequently he managed Darlington from October 1938 to May 1942.

He had four brothers, all of whom played for Middlesbrough: Walter and Henry, who signed as amateurs, and William and George, who both signed professional contracts for the club, George also playing for Leicester City and Stockport County.
