Nigg, Aberdeen born centre forward or right half Alex “Sandy” Caie began his football career with Victoria United of Aberdeen in 1895 and signed for Second Division Woolwich Arsenal in February 1897, making his Football League debut against Burton Swifts the same month, scoring in a 3-0 victory at The Manor Ground. He scored 4 goals in 8 appearances before the end of the season before joining Southern League Bristol City in the 1897 close season, spending two seasons with The Robins before returning to London to join Millwall Athletic in 1899.

By now playing at right half, he was signed by Newcastle United in May 1901, playing 25 times in their 1901-02 campaign as Newcastle finished third in the League Championship. He scored his only goal for Newcastle deputising at centre forward in a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in December 1902, before returning to the capital to join Southern League Brentford in the 1903 close season after 35 appearances for The Toon.

Caie played a single season for The Bees, making 25 appearances, before joining Scottish League club Motherwell in the summer of 1904, where he made 6 appearances for The Steelmen in 1904-05 before emigrating to Canada. In Canada he played for Westmount, Sons of Scotland and Rosedale between 1907 and his death in a rail accident in Massachusetts in November 1913.
