Description

Sheffield, Yorkshire born outside left Ben Burley joined hometown professional club Sheffield United from Woodhouse Mills United in 1931 spending 1931-32 at Bramall Lane without making the first eleven. In 1933 he joined Second Division club Southampton making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue in April 1934, appearing twice for them at the season’s end. He moved to First Division Grimsby Town in June 1934 where he scored 5 goals in 22 appearances as Grimsby finished 5th in the First Division in what is the club’s highest ever league finish.

He then joined Norwich City for £650 in June 1935, but was used sporadically scoring 4 goals in 37 appearances over the next three seasons, before joining Darlington in May 1938 where he scored 8 times in 38 appearances in 1938-39 but stayed only a single season with The Quakers before joining non league Chelmsford City in the summer of 1939, his career then being effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War that September.
