Description

Tranent, East Lothian born left half Billy Forrest started his football career with junior clubs Haddington in 1925, Musselburgh Bruntonians in 1926, and Tranent Juniors in 1927 before joining St Bernard’s in 1928, from where he joined First Division Middlesbrough in 1929, making his Football League debut at Manchester United in January 1930. He soon established himself as a ‘Boro regular, missing only two games in 1930-31, and it was said of him that he “excels in the art of purveying ‘on the carpet’, an attribute that impressed [manager] Peter McWilliam”.

He played for Middlesbrough throughout the 1930’s helping them to successive League Championship finishes of seventh, fifth and fourth in 1936-37, 1937-38 and 1938-39 respectively, scoring 8 times in 335 appearances until his career was cut short by the outbreak of the Second World War at the start of the 1939-40 season, with peacetime football then abandoned in September 1939.

In August 1946 he became the manager of Darlington and stayed four seasons, leaving the post in April 1950.
